The 4th Edition is being printed and should be available for purchase by summer. I use and recommend the Kindle digital version which can be purchased from Amazon.com. Vijeo Look 2.6 Serial Serial Numbers TakenIf you dont want to purchase a copy, just post the description or a picture of the guns you are interested in along with their serial numbers taken from the butt of the gun and someone can look up the shipping date for you. If posting the entire SN bothers you, just XX out the last two or three digits but make sure you give us the total number of digits because SNs start at 1 and go into 6 figures. You can never do more, you should never wish to do less Robert E. Lee. SW only knows when it was shipped out the door by looking it up in the old record books or now computer records. Roy Jinks SW Historian can look up the ship dates and can send a 50 letter on the information that he can find from factory shipping records. The Standard Catalog of Smith Wesson and other books use the information that they have as to when certain models were made and when certain serial numbered guns left the factory and made approximate estimates as to when a certain serial numbered gun was made. Vijeo Look 2.6 Serial Serial Number Order AndAt Smith Wesson frames were Numbered prior to assembly but were NOT put together in Serial Number order and after it was put together and test fired and placed in a box the chances were that it went to the Safe room to wait with many other guns to fill specific orders. Orders were filled by the Model, Caliber, Finish, and Barrel length that the customer wanted not by Serial number order. Serial Numbers were recorded at the time the order was sent out. We know that some guns sat in the safe for a considerable period of time before being shipped to a customer. The estimates found in the Standard Catalog of Smith Wesson are as close as possible with the information that we have. The Standard Catalog of SW 4th edition is at the Printer now and we expect that it will be available by October. I am not a PC person and I need to turn the pages.Attached pics of my SW.38 DA sn 545XXX. I bought it a couple of years ago from Allans armory. It was listed as a fifth model dated around 1910.I have not fired it yet. Questions. 1. Is this revolver a Black powder.38 SW or smokeless The left side of the barrel is stamped 38. S.W.OTG. (pic no go) 2..38 SW Safety Hammerless Lemon Sqeezer Black powder.38 SW eg a third model sn 113xxx no pic yet 3..32 SW Safety Hammerless Lemon Squeezer Smokeless.32 SW for example a 2nd model 143xxx sorry no pic yet. Not sure as to the exact manufacture date between 1889-1898 I had to replace the cylinder catch hook. I went to the range and fired off SW 145 gr Fiocchi without any problems. I have been told by some members of my gun club that I should use black powder.38 SW cartridges. I am confused. I plan to order the SW reference book but is still not available yet. Thats because.38 SW was a popular cartridge when smokeless powder became prevalent. The cartridge manufacturers kept the nitro powder at approximately the same pressure as BP so the older guns could shoot either. The same holds true for.32 SW. Around 1909, SW published a statement that all its BP guns could safely shoot commercial smokeless cartridges. I have several 38 and 32s top break, SA, DA and Safety hammerless models, and enjoy shooting them on occasion. Ive found that the best option for ammo is to reload using lead bullets backed by just enough Trailboss powder to not be compressed when seating the bullet.
